The last few days were nothing special. I adjusted my eating times as needed and continued as planned.
Today I decided to add something new to the mix and start exercising. Since I haven’t exercised in quite some time, I decided walking would be the best choice. I chose a site at one of our local parks that has a paved level path with benches I could sit on to rest as needed. This path is set up around a pond called the “Lagoon”. One lap around the lagoon is equivalent to ¼ mile. I set up bench marks about 1/3 around the lap where I would stop and catch my breath, then continue to the next bench mark. Every full lap I would sit on a bench to catch my breath and give my hip flexors a rest.
I learned a long time ago not to over extend what your body is capable of doing. Back in 1999, I started a medically supervised liquid diet. I weighed over 400 lbs then and it was difficult for me to walk any distance even though I was working full time as a nurse in a hospital. Back then it was suggested I start walking. I would walk around the block, carrying the cordless telephone from my house (we didn’t have cell phones back then). It had a range where I could use the intercom function to call for help if I couldn’t make it back home. I would walk a little ways then sit on the curb. Walk a little further then sit on the curb, until I eventually made it back home. I never did have to use that phone to call for help. I progressed to walking 6-7 miles per day over the next 6 months, so I figured walking was a good place to start now.
I made 2 laps around the Lagoon which is ½ mile. Not bad for my first attempt. My reward for finishing my walk was to sit on a bench, drink my coffee, while listening to an audio book on personal development. I am a firm believer in the reward system to accomplish any task and this was a good one for me.
